How to Light a Fire

17 June 2021  /  How To, Things To Do

Welcome to K&N Fire-lessons 101…

A part of the Kip and Nook experience is lighting your own fire, whether it’s too cozy up the OG or to heat your hot tub! Each hot tub is a log-burning tub, and so having some basic fire-making skills is always a handy bit of survival trivia to have in your back pocket. (Especially if you’re staying in the Cabin and fancy a hot shower in the morning because, yes, it’s heated by a fire! Off-grid experience after all!)

However, we know ‘fire-making was not on everyone’s timetable at school, so here are some quick and simple steps to help you get started:

  1. Place the larger logs around the side of the fire pit.
  2. Break off a little bit of firelighter, you will only need one strip to get your fire started. Break into 4 pieces and dot them around the center of the fire pit.
  3. Place the kindling around the firelighters in a staggered pattern. You want to make sure there are plenty of air gaps in between the wood.
  4. Light the firelighters using the matches.
  5. Use the larger logs to balance on top of the logs around the edge to build up the fire. Again maintaining the staggered pattern so there are plenty of air gaps.
  6. As the fire burns out throughout the night, top-up by adding more logs making sure to not suffocate the fire.
  7. When finished, simply let the fire burn out.

And it’s as simple as that! Of course, if you do have some difficulty you can ask myself or Ben to help you. But we seriously encourage you to give it a go as part of the off-grid getaway experience!
